Great Falls' Favorite Tables Have New Faces This Year. The Holidays Are Their First Real Test.

Great Falls' Favorite Tables Have New Faces This Year. The Holidays Are Their First Real Test.

In July 2023, Julie and Kaveh Safa walked into Brx American Bistro on Seneca Road with gift cards they had bought at a school silent auction. FFXnow reported that their server that night was the restaurant's owner. He mentioned over bread pudding that he was ready to retire, and he asked whether they wanted to buy the place. "We were like, oh my gosh, we can serve our neighbors," Julie Safa told the outlet.

In 2026, that bistro reopened under a new name. A few miles away, a French restaurant that has been in Great Falls since 1976 has a new steward. In between, a Maryland bar-and-grill concept has opened its first Virginia location in Great Falls Center. Most of what changed this year in Great Falls dining is who sits behind the host stand. The people now in charge have largely promised to keep everything else as it was. The stretch from Halloween to the December tree lighting is the first busy season where that promise gets tested.

Seneca Road Kept Its Bistro and Its Wine Cellar

After nearly two decades as Brx American Bistro, 1025 Seneca Road, Suite I, is now The Cellar on Seneca. The new name points to something that was already there, the building's existing wine cellar. The owners have local ties. Kaveh Safa grew up on the same Great Falls street where the couple later bought their home, and their business partner, Andrew Cope, also grew up in Great Falls. They came to this with restaurant experience, since they already run Courthaus Social in Arlington and Yum Yum Hibachi in Ashburn.

The restaurant's site now reads "Now Open." It lists evening hours every day of the week:

  • Sunday: 4 to 9 p.m.
  • Monday: 5 to 9 p.m.
  • Tuesday through Saturday: 4 to 10 p.m.

For the season ahead, the most useful page is The Cellar's events listing. It describes quarterly chef's-table wine dinners and private rentals for holiday parties. Anyone hosting a December gathering for neighbors or colleagues now has a Great Falls option with a cellar downstairs.

The deal also covered a second restaurant. By the end of November after that first visit, the Safas and Cope had closed on both the bistro and BRX Oven in Seneca Plaza. BRX Oven kept its own name. Its site still advertises weekday happy hour and lunch specials from 3 to 6 p.m. and weekend brunch from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. So one ownership change produced one rebrand and one restaurant that carries on unchanged.

Georgetown Pike's Landmark Chose "Preservation"

L'Auberge Chez François is where that continuity pitch is spelled out most plainly. Starting in September, Warren Thompson, president of Reston-based Thompson Restaurants, took on what the restaurant's own announcement calls the role of "steward." The same release names Jacques Haeringer as owner and executive chef. Thompson describes himself there as a longtime guest of the restaurant.

FFXnow's coverage, republished from InsideNoVa, quoted the restaurant's representatives directly: "The goal isn't reinvention, it's preservation. Same Alsatian menu, same charm, same staff, same sense of occasion." That promise stands out against the size of Thompson's company. Thompson Restaurants runs 15 brands across more than 70 locations, including matchbox and Makers Union. At L'Auberge, the plan is to change as little as possible.

So far the fall calendar looks like a restaurant keeping its traditions. The Thanksgiving page advertises a seven-course dinner on Thursday, November 26, with Whiffletree Farm organic turkey. Adults pay $150 to $162, the children's menu is $95, and there are three seatings. Reservations opened October 15, so the earliest seatings have had two weeks to fill. The events page adds four more dates through the end of November:

  1. Thursday, October 29, 6 p.m.: Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine dinner
  2. Thursday, November 19, 6 p.m.: Linden Vineyards wine dinner
  3. Saturday, November 21: Thanksgiving wine festival and luncheon
  4. Sunday, November 29, 11 a.m.: Thanksgiving-weekend musical brunch

The regular schedule still includes lunch Wednesday through Saturday and on Sunday until 3 p.m.

The One True Newcomer Is the One Still Changing

Great Falls Lodge Bar & Grill, at 9835 Georgetown Pike in Great Falls Center, is the only one of these restaurants with no history in town to protect. It is also the one changing fastest. Owner and chef Neel Kamal told FFXnow that Fairfax County permitting and inspections "took longer than expected," which pushed the opening from early summer into September. The concept began with Urbana Lodge and Clarks Lodge in Maryland, and Great Falls is its first Virginia location. Kamal describes the food as classic American bar fare with Asian flavors. The early menu leaned western, with burgers, flatbreads, baby back ribs, Maryland crab cakes and jambalaya.

The schedule has already grown. FFXnow's September report described dinner-only service from 3 to 10 p.m. The Lodge's site now lists 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, plus weekend brunch on Saturday and Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. In October the site still described a "curated soft launch menu" and promised the full dining experience "this October." Its October calendar ends with a Halloween costume party on Saturday the 31st.

Great Falls Center is unlikely to be the brand's last Northern Virginia stop. Kamal has a larger Vienna Lodge planned in the former Blackfinn Ameripub space at 2750F Gallows Road in Dunn Loring, and no opening timeline has been given.

Where the Restaurant Calendar Meets the Town Calendar

These three restaurants matter for the season because their events fall on the same dates as the community's own fixtures. Halloween weekend is the clearest example. The Celebrate Great Falls Foundation's free Halloween Spooktacular runs at Village Centre Green on Saturday, October 31, with a dog parade and costume contest from 3 to 4 p.m. and trick-or-treating from 5 to 7 p.m. That same night, Riverbend Park holds Halloween in the Hollows from 7 to 8:30 p.m., and the Lodge hosts its costume party.

Saturday, November 21 is the busiest day on the list. The Great Falls Studios Holiday ArtFest opens at St. Francis Episcopal Church that weekend, with more details still to come from the organizer. On the same day, L'Auberge holds its Thanksgiving wine festival a short drive up Georgetown Pike. A Saturday morning can also start at the Great Falls Farmers Market, which runs year-round every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at 756 Walker Road.

The foundation's free Celebration of Lights takes place Sunday, December 6, from 4 to 6 p.m. on Village Field behind the post office, and Santa is scheduled to light the tree at 5 p.m. The Cellar on Seneca serves until 9 p.m. on Sundays, so dinner on Seneca Road fits easily after the lighting.

In 2026 the people behind these dining rooms changed, while the Alsatian menu, the cellar on Seneca Road and the bistro's address stayed put. Thanksgiving week at L'Auberge, holiday parties at The Cellar and the Lodge's first full season of brunch are where the town will see how the new owners deliver.
